Subtly Racist
Several months ago I attended a wedding in a town out in the country which is struggling to find its way into the 20th century. Having been raised in such a town, I feel I have the right to judge others by such standards
It was a Lutheran wedding with the usual predetermined text and dialogue banter between the pastor and congregation.
In the middle of the wedding, the pastor puts down the script and says something of the sort:
For today’s object lesson, I bring this bag of blackberries [holds up bag o' blackberries] that I picked while out walking in the woods. As you’ll see, there are many correlations between marriage and these blackberries; things that are contradictory and that just don’t seem like they could go together. For example, these berries are black, but they’re good…[and so on]
This statement shocked me enough that I almost chortled out loud. I couldn’t believe he said that. Well, I take that back, I guess I could believe it.
I wasn’t the only one that caught the words. In a predominantly white church, there was one black man sitting two rows up from me almost directly in front. At the comment, I saw him noticeably stiffen.
Now, I don’t think those words were meant to carry a different meaning. I’m pretty sure it was a slip of the tongue that maybe just shows we’re a little too politically correct nowadays. Or not? I dunno, but it makes me laugh.

that’s crazy. probably a slip of the tongue or not thinking through it that way… but still that’s pretty stupid. i think things are still getting better and better.
See I would have thought he meant that black foods are usually spoiled. I would never have thought anything about race in the context of blackberries.
That the black person thought so doesn’t surprise me as modern blacks seem to be hypersensitive to any possible reference to their skin color, or at least one hears a lot about it.
